When Does "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" (1970) Take Place?

"Beneath the Planet of the Apes" is a science fiction film written by Paul Dehn with Mort Abrahams and released May 26th, 1970.

It takes place on the Planet of the Apes universe timeline in the year:

3979 AD

We know this because just before the three surviving astronauts disembark from the sinking spaceship in the second scene of the first film, "Planet of the Apes" (1968), astronaut George Taylor manages a quick look at the ship dashboard counter. It is stopped at 3978 AD.

Since the events of the previous film, at least a few months have passed. This places the film in 3979 AD.

Astronaut John Brent, a character in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes", claims the year is 3955 AD and this is carried over into the further sequels but ignored by most fans as a mistake (either by the character or the production, depending on your point of view).

In the fifth film, "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" (1973), all these events are referred to as happening in 3950 AD

Although it is chronologically the last film in the original "Planet of the Apes" pentalogy, it can be watched second after the first film, "Planet of the Apes" (1968)
