When Does "Almost Famous" (2000) Take Place?

"Almost Famous" is a historical fiction film written by Cameron Crowe and released September 15th, 2000.

It takes place in the year:

1973 AD

We know this because after the time jump at the end of the prologue, a time setting title card appears that tell us is it "1973". Furthermore, at a few times throughout the film, Stillwater's touring bus has a marquee that can be clearly seen as "ALMOST FAMOUS-TOUR 73" and, later, "STILLWATER-TOUR 73".

Additionally, the film's prologue begins right after the opening credits and a series of establishing shots with a place and time setting title card reading "San Diego, 1969". William Miller's age checks out with these dates since he's 15 during the main action of the film in 1973 AD and 11 during the prologue in 1969 AD

15 - 11 = 4.

1969 + 4 = 1973.

There's also a quick montage epilogue in which the tour bus now proudly displays the phrase "NO MORE AIRPLANES-TOUR 74", implying that it is now 1974 AD

It has also been reported Crowe based the story on his own adolescent experience.

A director's cut was released on DVD.
