When Does "Back to the Future" (1985) Take Place?

"Back to the Future" is a science fiction film written by Bob Gale with Robert Zemeckis and released July 3rd, 1985.

It takes place in the years:

1985 AD/1955 AD

We know this because Doc Emmett Brown's time machine's source year and destination year are stated and shown many, many times.

Most notably, just before the second instance of time travel in the film, the time machine's dashboard reads "NOV" "05" "1955" or November 5th, 1955 AD. Also, once there, a pedestrian throws away a newspaper Marty McFly picks up and assumes is current. It clearly says "Saturday, November 5, 1955".

Then, at the end of the film, the time machine's dashboard reads "OCT" "26" "1985" or October 26th, 1985 AD, indicating the time Marty left from at the start of the film.

It was adapted to prose in 1985 and 2021, to video games in 1985 and 1989, then as a stage musical in 2020
