When Does the Film "Iron Man 3" (2013) Take Place?

"Iron Man 3" is a superhero film written by Shane Black with Drew Pearce [adapting "The Invincible Iron Man" #1-#3 v4 (2004-2005) by Warren Ellis with as well as "The Invincible Iron Man" annual #1 v2 (2010) by Matt Fraction] and released April 22nd, 2013.

It takes place on the fictional Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline in the year:

2012 AD

We know this because multiple characters state several times that it has been 13 years since the 1999/2000 AD prologue. Therefore, the film's main action takes place in the week leading up to Christmas Day in 2012 AD.

1999 + 13 = 2012.

Additionally, there is a prologue that specifically takes place on December 31st, 1999 AD. The movie opens with a time and place setting title card reading, "1999 BERN, SWITZERLAND" and the very next shot includes a new title card: "New Year's Eve". A few quick moments the next morning must take place in 2000 AD

There's also a handful of scenes that make up a multi-part epilogue. These must take place after Christmas Day 2012 AD and (at least one depicting a character undergoing surgery) must take place more than a few days after. So, the audience is brought into 2013 AD

This Geekritique article and video examines its exact setting.

It is a chronologically midway film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (the fifth chronological film to feature Tony Stark/Iron Man; the third chronological film to feature him solo).
