When Does "John Wick" (2014) Take Place?

"John Wick" is a crime film written by Derek Kolstad that released October 24th, 2014. So when is "John Wick" set?

It takes place on the fictional John Wick timeline in the year:

2014 AD

We know this because John Wick drives a Mustang with a 2014 AD car inspection certification expiration date sticker on its windshield in the next film, "John Wick: Chapter 2" (2017), which takes place merely hours or days after this film. After 2010 AD, car inspection certification stickers were only good for 2 years in the state of New Jersey, placing the story in 2012 AD at the absolute earliest.

More specifically, as Wick arrives during the prologue someone announces a weather forecast over the radio saying: "Good news is today should be sunny with highs in the low sixties." ..."get out there enjoy the sun! Go to the park-- get outside, if you can, because it's not going to last long" ..."potentially long winter". So it is almost certainly sometime in the autumn of 2014 AD.

This Reddit user made an exhaustive attempt to pin down how long the first three films take to occur.

It is the chronologically fourth story in the John Wick universe (the first chronological film to feature John Wick) and can be watched at its timeline point or entirely separately.
