When Does the Film "The Dark Knight" (2008) Take Place?

"The Dark Knight" is a superhero crime film written by Jonathan Nolan with Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer [adapting "Batman" #1 (1940) by Bill Finger as well as "Detective Comics" #66 (1942) by Bill Finger & "Batman" annual #14 (1990) by Andrew Helfer] and released in a public theater July 14th, 2008. (Wide release was July 18th, 2008.)

It takes place on an alternate timeline of the fictional DC Films Universe in the year:

2008 AD

We know this because, at roughly a third of the way though the movie, current court papers are clearly visible on a judge's bench that state "on this 25th day of July, 2008" (and a stamp on the next page of documents that fuzzily reads "JUL 25 2008") while she is hearing the opening of the case.

This StackExchange user examined the exact setting of the three movies called The Dark Knight trilogy.

It is a chronologically midway film in the DC Films timeline (an early film to feature Bruce Wayne/Batman and a first to feature The Joker) and should be watched at its timeline point.
