When Does "IT" (1986) Take Place?

"IT" is a horror novel written by Stephen King and released September 15th, 1986.

It takes place in the years:

1957 - 1958 AD & 1984 - 1985 AD

We know this because the very first page of chapter one ["After the Flood (1957)"] includes the phrases "this afternoon in the fall of 1957" and "In that autumn of 1957, eight months before the real horrors began and twenty-eight years before the final showdown".

9-11.1957 + 8 months = 5-7.1958.
1957 + 28 = 1985.

The story is told in two distinct timelines: the main characters' childhoods and their adulthoods.

On the first page of chapter 2 ["After the Festival (1984)"], the narrator tells us, "On this day, almost twenty-seven years later".

1958 + 27 = 1985.

And, on the first page of chapter 3 ["Six Phone Calls (1985)"], we know, "That night, lacking roughly six months of being twenty-eight years from the day in 1957...".

28 - 6 months = 6.27.
1957 + 6.27 = 6.1984.

It was adapted to television in 1990 and to film in 2017.
