When Does "Sister Act" (1992) Take Place?

"Sister Act" is a comedy film written by Paul Rudnick/Joseph Howard and released May 29th, 1992.

It takes place in the year:

1991 AD

We know this because at about three-quarters through the movie a police department funds disbursement record slip is clearly seen (on top of a plot-related, and very recent, record slip dated "10-15") that has a handwritten "9-7" next to "Date" and, next to the pre-printed "19", there's a handwritten: “91”.

In contradiction to this: The end of the film includes a visit to San Francisco by the then-Pope, John Paul II. Pope John Paul II (served 1978 to 2005) only visited San Francisco once, in September of 1987 AD

Either way, we know the story's main action almost certainly all takes place in under "2 months" because that is the time Deloris Van Cartier is told it will take to get a trial date and then Lieutenant Eddie Souther declares, "great news. I pulled some strings. Judge agreed to move up the trial." making it sometime less than 2 months. This means the entire narrative fits inside 1987 AD or 1991 AD.

Additionally, there is a prologue with a time and place setting title card reading “Saint Anne’s Academy, 1968” over the very first shot of the movie. This depiction of Deloris' childhood makes sense in its labeled year of 1968 AD
