When Does "Forget Me Not" (2021) Take Place?

"Forget Me Not" is a science fiction novel written by Alexandra Oliva and released March 2nd, 2021.

It takes place in the year:

2028 AD

We know this because at just a tenth into the story, Anvi Hendrickson mentions “the 2016 election through the pandemic.” and the narrator immediately tells the reader “The former was Linda’s last winter on the property”. Later, when specifically talking about her old Cedar Lake home, “She hasn’t been there in twelve years” and, as this was Linda Niequist’s only home growing up, this is the same place.

2016 + 12 = 2028.

Furthermore, when Anvi asks Linda nearly halfway through the narrative, “How old are you again?”, she answers "Twenty-four." Because of the excerpts from the heartbreaking e-mails drafted but never sent by Lorelei Niequist throughout the book, WE know Linda was born between an e-mail draft saved at "12:37 A.M. 2/9/2005" and one saved at “10:09 A.M. 2/9/2005”.

2.2005 + 24  = 2.2029.

HOWEVER, Linda’s registered birthday is “September 3” because SHE does not know her actual birthday and the narrator tells us, “Since moving, she’s started calculating her age from the start of the calendar year” so she believes she is 24-years-old when she is probably actually still 23.

2005 + 23 = 2028.

More specifically, the opening pages tell us, at the start of the novel, school is in session and Linda steps out into “winter daylight.” with strangers wearing “gloves” and a “scarf”. The narrator also mentions “the water fountains—turned off for the winter” but mentions no Christmas decorations so it’s probably November of 2028 AD.
