When Does "Stereophonic" (2023) Take Place?

"Stereophonic" is a historical fiction stageplay written by David Adjmi and first performed October 29th, 2023.

It takes place in the years:

1976 AD - 1977 AD

We know this because, in act 1 scene 1, producer Grover refers to the real-world band Toto as an unknown band he has worked with. Toto first found fame after releasing their first album and being nominated for a Grammy Award. Other musicians not hearing of them would be far less likely after the 21st Annual Grammy Awards, held on February 15th, 1979 AD. They formed and began work on their first album in 1977 AD but several members of the band had worked together as session musicians as early as 1973 AD. A producer working with them could only have known they'd decided to form a band soon after they'd decided it themselves while working on Boz Scaggs' album "Silk Degrees" in September/October of 1975 AD.

Christmas ornaments have been added to the studio in act 3 scene 1 so it's presumably December of 1976 AD at this point in the story. The characters discuss, later in act 4, the more-than-a-year-long process that has spun out of control in recording their next album.

1976 + 1 = 1977.
