When Does "No-No Boy" (1957) Take Place?

"No-No Boy" is a historical fiction novel written by John Okada and released May 1957. 


It takes place in the year: 

1946 AD 


We know this because Ichiro 'Itchy' Yamada narrates to the audience that "" . 

1942 + 2 = 1944 
and 
1944 + 2 = 1946. 

Additionally, there is a prologue from a different omniscient narrator that tells the reader about the national reaction to the famous and tragic attack by Japan on Hawaii's Pearl Harbor base among the West Coast Japanese-American community and the other communities it interacts with. "" The Pearl Harbor attack occurred on December 7th, 1941 AD so this first passage must take place from December 7th to the ? of 1941 AD. 

The second half of the prologue covers ? to the United States of America's illegal forced internment of 120,000 Japanese-American citizens, starting on February 19th, 1942 AD . 

The main character of Ichiro is based on the real-world Hajime 'Jim' Akutsu, a classmate of Okada's. 

It was adapted to the stage in 2010.
