When Does "Derry Girls" Season One (2018) Take Place?

"Derry Girls" season one is a comedy historical fiction television series showran by Lisa McGee that released January 4th, 2018. So when is "Derry Girls" season 1 set?

It takes place in the year:

1994 AD

We know this because the real-world political and military instability in Northern Ireland is still ongoing and violent as it was from roughly 1966 AD until the Good Friday Agreement on April 10th, 1998 AD. So the entire season must be between 1966 AD and April of 1998 AD.

Furthermore, the very first shot of season 1 "Episode 4" includes a huge homemade banner reading: "WE WELCOME THE  CHILDREN OF CHERNOBYL", referring to the students being hosted for a break from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant meltdown. Katya, one of the exchange students specifically says, "Chernobyl was terrible nuclear accident." The famous and tragic disaster happened on April 26th, 1986 AD in the real world. So it must be after April of 1986 AD.

More specifically, in season 1 "Episode 1" Michelle Mallon raves about a new movie she saw the night before on some kind of home video format: "it's about these two lads and they wear these cracking suits and they rock about just shooting people and eatin' cheeseburgers" so it's certainly "Pulp Fiction" (1994), which premiered in Ireland in October of 1994 AD and was released on VHS in 1995 AD. So it's probably during or after 1995 AD.

It has also been reported McGee based the story on her own adolescent experience.

This The Tab article by Hermione Blandford examines its exact setting.
