When Does "Derry Girls" Season One (2018) Take Place?

"Derry Girls" season one is a comedy historical fiction television show showran by Lisa McGee and released January 4th, 2018.

It takes place in the year:

1994 AD

We know this because the real-world political and military instability in Northern Ireland is still ongoing and violent as it was from roughly 1966 AD until the Good Friday Agreement on April 10th, 1998 AD. So it must be before April of 1998 AD.

Furthermore, in season 1 "Episode 1" Erin Quinn says, "Good one, Geldoff!" to mock her friend Clare Devlin's efforts to help underprivileged people in Africa. "Geldoff" certainly refers to the real-world musician and activist Bob Geldoff (1951-), who began the musical charity-focused supergroup Band Aid in 1984 AD. So it must be after 1984 AD.

Later in the same scene, Orla McCool says, "But Erin, 'Murder She Wrote' 's on tonight, you never miss 'Murder, She Wrote'?" The television show "Murder, She Wrote" (1984) aired in Ireland from 1985 AD to ?. An episode "on tonight" that one could miss implies this isn't a rerun.

More specifically, in the next scene, Michelle Mallon raves about a new movie she saw the night before on some kind of home video format: "it's about these two lads and they wear these cracking suits and they rock about just shooting people and eatin' cheeseburgers" so it's certainly "Pulp Fiction" (1994), which premiered in Ireland in October of 1994 AD and was released on VHS in 1995 AD.

It has also been reported McGee based the story on her own adolescent experience.
