When Does "Best in Show" (2000) Take Place?

"Best in Show" is a comedy film written by Christopher Guest with Eugene Levy and released September 29th, 2000.

It takes place in the year:

2000 AD

We know this because, early in the film, Doctor Theodore W. Millbank III tells the audience, “My great-grandfather Millbank in 1875 began the Mayflower Kennel Club and Dog Show.” Much later, as the show begins, we see the digital graphics for the television broadcast of the competition and "FOUNDED 1875" can indeed be seen in the Mayflower logo. Buck Laughlin begins his work as the announcer in the very same shot and declares, "Live, from the Beyman Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., it's the 125th Annual Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show!" The digital display in an almost immediately following shot of the outside of the arena also clearly reads, “125th Annual”.

1875 + 125 = 2000.

This entire rigamarole is based on the real-world Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (founded in 1877 AD), usually held annually in February. So it’s probably February of 2000 AD.

Additionally, the story ends with an epilogue that opens with the time setting title card “six months later”. Half-a-year after February would be in August, still within the 2000 AD calendar year.

2.2000 + 6 months = 8.2000.
