When Does "Purgatorio" (1317) Take Place?

"Purgatorio" (released to English-speaking audiences as "The Purgatorio" or "Dante's Purgatory") is a political horror historical fiction epic poem written by Dante Alighieri that released 1317 (according to most scholars). So when is "Purgatorio" set?

It takes place in the year:

1299 AD

We know this because "Purgatorio" picks up only a day after the end of "Inferno" (1317), which takes place in either 1296 AD, 1299 AD, or 1300 AD.

It is the second poem of "Commedia" (or The Divine Comedy) and can be read after "Inferno" and before "Paradiso".

It was adapted to music in 1856, as part of a short film titled "The Dante Quartet" in 1987, and as part of an opera in 2021.
