When Does "No Country for Old Men" (2005) Take Place?

"No Country for Old Men" is a crime novel written by Cormac McCarthy that released July 19th, 2005. So when is "No Country for Old Men" set?

It takes place in the year:

1980 AD

We know this because when Llewelyn Moss is asked about his time in the American War in Vietnam, he replies, "August seventh nineteen and sixty-six to May second nineteen and sixty-eight." So it must be after May of 1968 AD.

More specifically, fairly early in the story when Anton Chigurh meets the gas station owner he asks, "You know what the date is on this coin?" When the man says, "No." Chigurh replies, "It's nineteen fifty-eight. It's been traveling twenty-two years to get here. And now it's here. And I'm here."

1958 + 22 = 1980.

It was adapted to film in 2007
