After they return to 1985 AD, the characters discover that somehow unbeknownst to them their entire timeline has been changed. This altered timelines is referred to as "1985A" in Doc Brown's dialogue and on the chalk diagram he draws.
When this mystery is resolved, Marty McFly says, "You're not gonna believe this! We have to go back to 1955!".
