When Does the Film "Wonder Woman 1984" (2020) Take Place?

"Wonder Woman 1984" is a superhero film written by Geoff Johns with Patty Jenkins and Dave Callaham [adapting "Wonder Woman" #7 v2 (1987) by George PĂ©rez with Len Wein] and released December 25th, 2020.

It takes place on the fictional DC Films timeline in the year:

1984 AD

We know this because (besides the year merely being in the title) Maxwell Lord is holding an issue of the fictional magazine "Oil Economist Weekly" cover dated "June 26th, 1984" when he picks up his mail about a quarter into the film. It being with his mail strongly implies it is brand new.

Later, Princess Diana a.k.a. Wonder Woman is talking vaguely about the passage of time since the end of World War I (World War I ended in 1918 AD) and says, "84. 1984". Soon after, a fireworks display suggests the story continues to Independence Day on July 4th, 1984 AD.

Furthermore, when Lord meets with the current President of the United States, his major concern is the Soviet Union, a federal organization of states that ceased to exist in December of 1991 AD

Additionally, the film's prologue depicts a moment from Diana's childhood and, since the previous film "Wonder Woman" (2017) established her birth and early years as something that happened during or just after the Amazons were given the island of Themyscira "when time was new", these scenes are unplaceable at this time.

It is a chronologically early film in the DC Films timeline (the second-earliest chronological film to feature Wonder Woman) and can be watched either at its timeline point or before "Justice League" (2017) as part of an extended flashback.
