When Does the First Remake of "Godzilla" (1998) Take Place?

"Godzilla" is an adventure horror (kaiju) film written by Terry Rossio with Ted Elliott, Don Macpherson, Dean Devlin, and Roland Emmerich [remaking "Gojira" (1954) by Takeo Murata with Ishirō Honda] and released May 20th, 1998.

It takes place in the years:

1990s AD

We know this because Dr. Niko Tatopoulos' file with the French secret service agents reads, "1964 á New-York" ["1964 in New York"], presumably under birthdate and birthplace. Niko Tatopoulos and Audrey Timmonds dated previous to the film's start and Audrey refers to Niko as "my college sweetie" so they met as college students. She later says that they dated for "nearly 4 years". Usually, people enter college at age 18 and leave college at age 22 in the United States of America. When Tatopoulos and Audrey are reunited, Audrey says, "That was 8 years ago". If it has been 8 years since they've seen each-other, presumably, this means it has been 8 years since they graduated from college (or soon after) and last saw one another. (More than 11 years and they couldn't have met as college students.) This makes Niko 30 to 33-years-old.

22 + 8 = 30.
or
25 + 8 = 33.

1964 + 30 = 1994.
or
1964 + 33 = 1997.

As Manhattan is being evacuated early in the film, reporter Charles Caiman refers to the circumstances as the worst for New York City since the famous and tragic bombing that damaged the World Trade Center towers in February 1993 AD.

It has been retroactively absorbed into the MonsterVerse Universe at a chronologically early spot (a first chronological film to feature Godzilla).
