When Does "How to Dance in Ohio" (2022) Take Place?

"How to Dance in Ohio" is a coming-of-age dramedy stage musical written by Rebekah Greer Melocik with Jacob Yandura and released September 21st, 2022.

It takes place roughly in the year:

~2022 AD

We know this because the famous and tragic worldwide COVID-19 pandemic is mentioned as the reason why Mel is still wearing a facemask years later, as many individuals did in the early 2020s. The pandemic began in February of 2020 AD but had no definite endpoint.

Furthermore, during the nineteenth song, “Nothing at All”, Remy shares his joy in character costume fashion (cosplay) and sings, “when I’m Miles Morales, then I really do believe I am a superhero in the Multiverse.” The character Miles Morales was introduced in “Ultimate: Fallout” #4 (2011) released August 3rd, 2011 AD but the character only became associated with passing from one dimensional reality or universe to another with the release of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018) in December of 2018 AD. The animated film's popularity grew over the coming months and public awareness of the famous main character exploded, resulting in a connection with multiverse narratives from 2019 AD on.

HOWEVER, it is directly based on real-world events that happened in Columbus, Ohio during the 3 months from early February to late April of 2013 AD, as chronicled in a documentary of the same name.

There was a Broadway revival in 2023.
