When Does "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" (2017) Take Place?

"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" is a comedy fantasy film written by Chris McKenna with Erik Sommers, Scott Rosenberg, and Jeff Pinkner and released December 20th, 2017.

It takes place in the year:

2016 AD

We know this because, a little more than halfway through the movie, after the four main characters meet Alex Vreeke, he says, “It’s 1996.” and Anthony ‘Fridge’ says, “You’ve been in this game for 20 years!”, roughly marking the passage of time since the 1996 AD prologue. Other characters hammer this home by saying “20 years” several times. This combined with the Christmas decorations visible in the high school early on and a tree brought to a home near the end means it is December of 2016 AD.

1996 + 20 = 2016.

Additionally, there’s a 1996 AD prologue that first introduces us to Alex moments to weeks after the epilogue of the previous film, "Jumanji" (1995). Alex’s statement: “It’s 1996.” clearly pinpoints the prologue’s time setting. It confirms a time setting title card that appears over the footage that reads: "1996".
