When Does the Film “Jumanji” (1995) Take Place?

“Jumanji” is a fantasy film written by Jonathan Hensleigh with Greg Taylor, Jim Strain, and Chris Van Allsburg [adapting "Jumanji" (1981) by Chris Van Allsburg] and released December 15th, 1995.

It takes place in the year:

1995 AD

We know this because when Officer Carl Bentley asks Alan Parrish what year it is currently, Judy answers for him with “1995”. Also, the first shot of the film's main action includes a title card that reads, “Twenty-six years later…” just after the second prologue in 1969 AD.

1969 + 26 = 1995.

Additionally, the first shot of the first prologue includes a time setting title card that reads “1869”. So this first introduction to the Jumanji game should be in 1869 AD

Then, early in the second prologue, there is a time setting title card telling the audience it is now in “1969 Brantford, New Hampshire”. This means the board game has been dormant for 100 years and brings us to 1969 AD

Finally, after a stop for the denouement back in 1969 AD, there is an epilogue with no time setting title card but implied to bring the viewers back to 1995 AD. The next film, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" (2017) tells us with a time setting title card that this final shot actually takes place in either very late 1995 AD or early 1996 AD
