We know this because during season 1 episode 1 "Model 101" begins immediately with a massive white-on-black title card reading "2022". The narrative bounces back and forth from this setting to another throughout the season.
Later, characters time travel and an advertisement is visible in the background for the original PlayStation video game console system, which launched in Japan on December 3rd, 1994 AD, and was superseded by the PlayStation 2 system, which launched on March 4th, 2000 AD. An ad might be put up in advance of the release of a product but it wouldn't still be up for the release of its replacement so it must be between 1994 AD and March of 2000 AD.
More specifically, in season 1 episode 1 "Model 101", characters crowd around a holographic screen that reads "1997  Time Objective : A.D.1997". Perhaps more importantly, the same exact words are seen on another screen just before a Terminator robot steps into a time machine. It appears once again at the start of season 1 episode 2 "Model 102".
Furthermore, earlier as the plot moves on to the second setting a huge white-on-black title card of its own appears almost immediately that says "1997".
Additionally, season 1 episode 7 "Model 107" includes a massive flashback to 1983 AD.
