"All in German? Even Gunsmoke and Alfred Hitchcock Presents?" “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” .
More specifically, later in the first chapter we see Andrew McMahon "stopped when he overheard therm discussing Francis Gary Powers–the American U-2 pilot who'd been shot down by the Russians while taking photos of them." almost immediately after someone says, "Think we'll hold up under questioning?" and "He better." The real-world United States of American Air Force.pilot Francis Gary Powers was shot down over Soviet air space flying a secret spy mission on May 1st, 1960 AD. On February 10th, 1962 AD Powers was released as part of a prisioner exchange. So it must be during or after May of 1960 AD and before February of 1962 AD.
At the start of the second chapter the narrator simply says, "He'd been in Germany for almost three weeks." telling us a mere 3 weeks have passed since the start of the book.
"I had a terrific time at the Kinderfest." "You were visiting your cousin to see the fireworks for the Kinderfest"...
