When Does "Bugonia" (2025) Take Place?

"Bugonia" is a comedy science fiction film written by Will Tracy with Yorgos Lanthimos and Jang Joon-hwan [remaking "Jigureul jikyeora!" (2003) by Jang Joon-hwan] that released October 24th, 2025. So when is "Bugonia" set?

It takes place in the year:

2024? AD

We know this because early in the movie just before the kidnapping scene Michelle Fuller is listening to the song "Good Luck, Babe!" by Chappell Roan, which first released as a single on April 5th, 2024 AD.

Furthermore, early on an issue of the real-world magazine "Forbes" is seen framed and cover-dated for "April 16, 2024". So it must be during or after mid April of 2024 AD.

(HOWEVER, at one point Teddy Gatz exclaims, "That’s the fucking hyper-normalized dialectic by which you’ve convinced seven and a half billion people that they’re not your captives." Presumably he means to refer to the Planet Earth's entire population and that number crossed seven billion in roughly October of 2011 AD and then crossed eight billion in roughly November of 2022 AD. That would put the story sometime around 2017 AD. It is safe to assume Teddy simply makes a mistake in his moment of anger.)

Though, technically unplaceable it is possible Michelle is singing along to "Good Luck, Babe!".

Specifically, Teddy Gatz says, "We have 4 days until the lunar eclipse, when the Andromedan ship can return undetected." There is then title cards that countdown from "3 DAYS BEFORE THE LUNAR ECLIPSE" to "THE NIGHT OF THE LUNAR ECLIPSE" and .
