When Does the Film "The War of the Roses" (1989) Take Place?

"The War of the Roses" is a comedy film written by Michael J. Leeson [adapting "The War of the Roses" (1981) by Warren Adler] that released December 8th, 1989. So when is "The War of the Roses" set?

It takes place in the year:

1989? AD

We know this because . Barbara and Oliver Rose were married 17 years . Barbara uses her 1989 GMC Jimmy SLX V-1500 in an intense moment of anger. So it must be during or after 1989 AD.

More specifically, there's a hilarious sequence in which a Christmas tree is set on fire. So it's certainly December of YEAR AD at this point.

Additionally, there is a frame story featuring high and mighty lawyer Gavin D’Amato. D’Amato speaks of the story in main action as 'the past' so this frame narrative must be after 1989? AD.

Also, early in the movie during the first flashback when Barbara and Oliver walk through the Nantucket graveyard one grave marker reads "MARK GORDON  1937 - 1967". So it must be during or after 1967 AD at this point.

In the second flashback, .

More specifically, Barbara says during this part, "And, here. Being a waitress on Christmas Eve's very profitable." as she drops a wad of cash on Oliver's desk. Christmas Eve is always celebrated on December 24th so it must be December of YEAR AD. Their kids are present and .

Then, the audience moves forward a few more years . Later, D’Amato says, "I haven't been into feet since '82." referring back to this scene. Though this leaves us without an exact date we know it is most likely during or before 1982 AD.

Finally, there's a fourth flashback a few more years further down the line as the multi-part prologue wraps up and Barbara is seen driving her kids in a 1984 Volvo 240 GLT 245. So it's during or after 1984 AD at this point.
