When Does "In the Time of the Butterflies" (1994) Take Place?

"In the Time of the Butterflies" is a historical fiction novel written by Julia Alvarez that released September 1st, 1994. So when is "In the Time of the Butterflies" set? 


It takes place in the years: 

1938? AD - 1960? AD/1994? AD 

We know this because . 

Furthermore, at the end of the book the section labeled "A Postscript" includes "On August 6, 1960, my family arrived in New York City, exiles from the tyranny of Trujillo"... and "Almost four months after our escape, three sisters who had also been members of that underground"... The author continues with ..."so it is that what you find in these pages are not the Mirabel sisters of fact, or even the Mirabel sisters of legend." and, finally, "So what you will find here are the Mirabels of my creation, made up but, I hope, true to the spirit of the real Mirabels." So . Though this is merely peritext and therefore inconclusive. 

It was adapted to film in 2001.
