When Does "Freaks and Geeks" (1999) Take Place?

"Freaks and Geeks" is a historical fiction coming-of-age comedy television series showran by Judd Apatow that premiered September 25th, 1999. So when is "Freaks and Geeks" set?

It takes place in the year:

1980 AD

We know this because early on in episode two "Beers and Weirs" Lindsay Weir asks, "What's the matter?" and Nick Andopolis answers, "Um, John Bonham died, you know..." and Lindsay replies, "Yeah, I know. Last week." Musician John Bonham passed on September 25th, 1980 AD in the real world. So it must be early October of 1980 AD.

Furthermore, the very first shot of the very first scene of episode "Pilot" includes a time and place setting subtitle that reads first "WILLIAM MCKINLEY HIGH SCHOOL  MICHIGAN" and then "1980".

More specifically, episode three "Tricks and Treats" features all the characters celebrating the Halloween holiday so it is almost certainly late October of 1980 AD at this point.
