When Does "The Patriot" (2000) Take Place?

"The Patriot" is a historical fiction war film written by Robert Rodat that released June 30th, 2000. So when is "The Patriot" set?

It takes place in the years:

1776 AD - 1781 AD

We know this because very early on in the story the audience clearly sees the grave marker of a character and it is engraved: "In memory of  Elizabeth Putnam MARTIN  who departed this life Feb, the 19th  AD. 1773 in the 35th year of her age" so it must be during or after 1773 AD.

More specifically, the real-world Major General Nathanael Greene (1742-1786) appears and he passed on June 19th, 1786 AD. So it must be during or before June of 1786 AD.

Furthermore, very early on in the movie there is a time and place setting subtitle reading "South Carolina  1776".

Near the end of the story, we see the real-world Battle of Cowpens, which occurred on January 17th, 1781 AD. So we conclude in January of 1781 AD.

Additionally, there is a narrated epilogue in which the real-world Battle of Yorktown is described. This happened in the real world from September 28th, 1781 AD to October 19th, 1781 AD so it is 1781 AD during the epilogue.

There is also an "Extended Edition" of the film.
