When Does "Jerry Maguire" (1996) Take Place?

"Jerry Maguire" is a romantic comedy film written by Cameron Crowe that released December 13th, 1996. So when is "Jerry Maguire" set?

It takes place in the year(s):

(1995 AD -) 1996 AD

We know this because just as the opening narration ends, Jerry Maguire types up his "mission statement" on a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop. The logo is clearly legible (though upside down on the lid). The Satellite Pro laptop was first introduced by Toshiba on June 19th, 1995 AD in the real world. So it must be after mid June of 1995 AD at the beginning.

More specifically, at the end Arizona Cardinals football wide receiver Rod Tidwell appears on the real-world sports interview show Up Close, which went off the air on October 19th, 2001 AD. So it must be before mid October of 2001 AD at the end.

Specifically, near the story's end an announcer states that the Dallas Cowboys are "going in there looking for a second consecutive Super Bowl." and they won Super Bowl XXX in January of 1996 AD in the real world. The American gridiron National Football League season always starts in September and ends in January. They had already won two consecutive Super Bowls in January of 1993 AD and January of 1994 AD but they were not in the January of 1995 AD Super Bowl at all. In late 1995 AD, they were competing toward their first new win and not a "second consecutive" win in January of 1996 AD. Super Bowl XXX in January of 1996 AD was their only championship win between June of 1995 AD and October of 2001 AD so it must be late 1996 AD at the climax of the movie.

(HOWEVER, in the middle of the narrative Jerry says to little Ray Boyd, "Did you know that Troy Aikman, in only 6 years, has passed for sixteen thousand three hundred and three yards?" The real-world football quarterback Troy Aikman played his first NFL game on August 26th, 1989 AD. His full sixth season was the 1994 NFL season, which ended in January of 1995 AD. The next season started in September of 1995 AD and ended in January of 1996 AD. Since it must be during or just before April of 1996 AD, Jerry must be quoting an outdated statistic. He doesn't precisely say 'in only the past 6 years'.

1,989 + 6 = 1,995.)

Later, while Frank "Cush" Cushman is debating his NFL draft options and Rod is being paraded around by Jerry (very soon after the scene in which Aikman is mentioned) a huge banner reads "WELCOME TO THE NFL DRAFT" in the background. During the opening narration, Maguire said, "In Odessa, Texas– the great Frank Cushman. This April, twenty-six teams will be falling all over themselves to sign him in the next NFL draft. He's my client. My most important client." So it is clearly April of 1996 AD at this point.

Near the end, a television announcer declares, "The Cowboys continue their Super Bowl mission on Monday Night Football, a Christmas edition!" There's also a fan in the stands with a homemade sign that reads: "MERRY X-MAS  Go Cards" and the Boyd household has a Christmas tree in the living room. So it must be December of 1996 AD at the end.

Over the course of the tale, Marcee Tidwell goes from being pregnant to the mother of a newborn baby girl Rod refers to as "my baby, my new baby, Kaydee." even in the penultimate scene so only around 1 year passes and the entire thing takes place from either early 1996 AD or late 1995 AD to late 1996 AD.
